The Joan Ganz Cooney Early Learning Program

Pre Prep: The Joan Ganz Cooney Early Learning Program will open its doors in September 2014. The program is named after the pioneering co-founder of Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind Sesame Street. Joan Ganz Cooney was an inaugural kindergarten classroom “namesake” at Girls Prep Bronx Elementary School. She has served as an invaluable supporter and an incredible role model for our students since the school opened its doors in 2009.

The program is located in the historic Bronx Opera House at 436 E. 149th Street in District 8 and serves 54 students in a coeducational environment.  It will provide a distinctive educational experience within a playfully rich, cognitively demanding learning environment. The program is the foundation of a vertically-aligned, knowledge-based, interdisciplinary Pre-K through 8th grade curriculum designed to place students on a predictive path to college completion. The program seeks to advance students' social and emotional development, and help them to build the vocabulary, background knowledge, and early literacy skills which are essential for future learning. In addition, students will develop early mathematical skills such as pattern recognition, number identification, and counting.

Each classroom of 18 students will have one lead and one associate teacher, and we will also hire outstanding staff to provide special education and English Language Learning support. In addition, a full-time Sesame Workshop executive will provide invaluable expertise for the program's first year of operation.
